GLP-1 weight loss medications can disrupt your normal eating routines by seriously diminishing your hunger and causing gastrointestinal discomfort. If you’re taking one of these new buzzy drugs, including semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) or tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), healthy snacking habits can help reduce GLP-1 side effects and you get your nutrition back on track, says Melissa Mitri, RD, a dietitian in private practice in Monroe, Connecticut.

“If you’re finding that you feel very full from these medications, it can make it hard to eat enough throughout the day to meet your nutrient needs,” Mitri says. “Eating small, frequent meals may be more manageable to meet your needs at the end of the day. This may mean incorporating small, healthy snacks into your routine.”

Mitri recommends getting a good mix of lean protein and healthy carbs to provide a balance of quick energy and satiating nutrients. Protein also helps you lose less muscle as you slim down. Avoid processed junk food — the extra fat and sugar can make belly troubles worse, she says. “The best results will be seen when using these medications in conjunction with a balanced diet.”

These healthy, balanced, and low-fat snacks are all good choices when hunger strikes.
